It was nothing but smooth sails and quick work for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Halloween in Houston, Texas.
The Rams improved to 7-1 with a controlling and dominant win over the Houston Texans. It was a win that would come as no surprise to those who are familiar with both teams and the trajectory of their respective seasons.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford continues to push himself to the front of the NFL Most Valuable Player race exiting week eight with a very stout performance. Stafford went 21 for 32 for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns against the abysmal Houston defense that simply had no answers for the Rams offensive attack.
Aiding that attack was the run game, provided by running back Darrell Henderson. Henderson racked up numbers that have been par for the course for him so far this season. Possessing a bulk of the workload, Hendo had 90 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, as well as a receiving touchdown which would cap a very solid fantasy day for Henderson owners. Wide receiver Robert Woods would score the other rushing touchdown on 16 yard reverse play that would make the game 38-0 going into the fourth quarter.Wideout Cooper Kupp continues his monstrous string of performances this season as he tallied up 115 yards on 7 receptions and a touchdown catch. Sunday's performance adds to his league leading receiving yards total of 924 yards and ten total receiving touchdowns, which he also remains top dog at this point in the season.
The Rams offense remains one of the ultimate powers in the NFL going into week nine. A level of consistency that was a mere mirage with Jared Goff at the helm is so very noticeable with Stafford. The QB has been the perfect puzzle piece to this team and Head Coach Sean McVay's offense as his totals through eight weeks of the season are 22 touchdowns, 4 interceptions and 2,477 yards which has him second only to Buccaneers QB Tom Brady.
The defense have stiffened up and played well along the stretch, too. Aaron Donald and co. have only given up 42 points in the last three games and have played the alpha dog role in crucial spots against some very bad offenses. The main headline surrounding this defense is the Rams acquiring Denver Broncos outside line backer Von Miller before the trade deadline on November 2nd.
It's an undoubted huge upgrade at the LB position. Miller was sent to the Rams for the price of 2nd and 3rd round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Rams General Manager Les Snead's method of building through veteran trades and free agent acquisitions have been one of the biggest factors of the team remaining competitive but also just one of the best teams in the NFL during the Sean McVay era. L.A. is a place players want to play and McVay is a leader of men that has the resume that shows he puts his players in outstanding spots to succeed.
Focusing on Miller, he's still a very solid player. The Super Bowl 50 MVP will make an immediate positive impact on a Rams line backer corps that has been meddling since the days of Jeff Fisher. As long as Von can stay healthy, the sky is the limit for this group.
This move pushes the Rams up the totem pole of feared front sevens just mainly in terms of who do you double up? Do you focus on Aaron Donald which has been the key for so many offensive coordinators that take on L.A., or do you put your focus on Von Miller or opposite backer Leonard Floyd? While you put emphasis on who to block, you still have to remind your quarterback to avoid the best corner back in the league in Jalen Ramsey. This defense already had the makings of an absolute nightmare to game-plan against and now yet another element has been poured into the boiling experiment.
This team gets so much more exciting as the season continues. Now that the easy money 3 game slate is over, the Tennessee Titans wait in the wings for a big time Sunday Night Football matchup at SoFi Stadium. An SNF game that the Titans will be without their pound for pound best player in running back Derrick Henry who suffered a foot injury that will have him sidelined for 6-10 weeks. It's a major pity to Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel and OC Todd Downing as they approach a game against a revitalized Rams defense, without their King Henry.1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Final | ||
